Getting back to the actual advertisement. What self-respecting advertising professional would use someone else's tagline like that.

I had a few friends watching the football game (where we saw the ad) and half of them thought it was an iphone commercial because they were only half paying attention and heard "there's a map for that".

Pretty shoddy work in my opinion.

Seems like it worked. Got a lot of people talking about it, razzing on AT&T and saying good for them (Verizon). On an Apple forum no less. Mission accomplished.

Nice try, SavMan. But I'm not buying your interesting yet psuedoscientific explanation for why 5G iPods only 'appear' to scratch more easily.

White 5G iPods are just as easily scratched as the black ones, as any disappointed owner will tell you. I've had a 4G iPod for 2 years, carrying it back and forth to work in my pocket. I take it out of a Belkin case to recharge it, then put it back in for transport. The thing still looks practically new. I know someone else who purchased a new white 5G iPod. Within moments of gentle handling, the thing is covered with light scratches.

It seems to me that a softer grade of acrylic is being used on these latest iPods. I'm not the only one who's noticed this problem. I don't believe that it's the result of some optical coincidence. Everyone knows that there are hundreds (if not thousands) of complaints to be found on the net.

Whatever the reason is, a manufacturer who doesn't care what their customers have to say about their expensive products will soon find those customers flocking to other companies' products. Hellooooo Zune!

And no amount of fanboy cheerleading will stop it.

If you have a black nano or 5G iPod, try putting black electrical tape on the sides, covering the 'face' of acrylic. The scratches will seem significantly less obvious. I can attest that my 3G iPod (rounded corners) has just as many scratches as my white nano, and my 3G iPod was very well taken care of (always in its included case,) whereas my nano was usually just thrown in my pocket.

SavMan's explanation seems to be a very good explanation. Not fanboyness. (If I did more than just listen to music on my nano, I'd probably be angry about the more obviousness of the scratches on it. But since I almost never look at the screen, it just doesn't bother me. Just like the scratches on the 3G's screen don't bother me.)

Adding those decreased time for other things, ideally World History and American History would be 1.5 years. JFK gets summarized as the first Catholic to get elected to president, led the disastrous Bay of Pigs and then got shot, ignoring the Peace Corps and the Space Program. John Hinckley Jr. isn't in the textbooks at all, IIRC he tried to kill Reagan and there was something about Jodi Foster

I have no idea what experience you are speaking from, but it isn't universal.

I assure you that in the junior high, high school, and college classes I took, Hinckley was mentioned, JFK may or may not have been described as a Catholic, and Jodi Foster wasn't even popular yet.

Sure, and I could easily find stats for deaths caused by automobiles and speeding.

While I'm with you on the speeding, let's take a look at deaths caused by automobiles.

    44,128 [2007 WISQARS (http://webappa.cdc.gov/sasweb/ncipc/mortrate10_sy.html)]

So for every 4 people that die due to motor vehicles, 3 die due to firearms.

    Did you know that?

It's especially frightening when you consider the utility motor vehicles bring to our lives. They not only get us to work, they deliver our goods across the country. Motor vehicles are an integral part of our everyday lives. They get us to the grocery store, the soccer field and haul massive amounts of material across the nation.

Guns, if stored properly, sit locked away in a cabinet, rarely seeing the light of day.

Yet they kill nearly as many people as all motor vehicles.

    Is that insane?

Yeah. That's what I've been trying to tell you.

price drop = good, improved specs = good, but i think they could have done better. i see the ACD as a premium monitor so I think they should at least be comparable a similar dell (in terms of specs). If you're looking for a 30", then the ACD is now a very good deal ($1999 vs $2149 and the specs are a little better on the ACD). Personally, I'm looking into the 23/24" monitor (though I wouldn't mind the 30". Here's what I see:

    Dell - 24", 0.270 mm, 450 cd/m, 1000:1, 16 ms, $879 (on sale right now for $747)
    Apple - 23", 0.258 mm, 400 cd/m, 700:1, 14 ms, $999 ($899 through edu store)

The price drop and improved specs are good, but it's too bad that they don't match or exceed the dell monitors in all categories - maybe I'm just expecting too much. Oh well, a guy can dream right?

The reasons people HATE this new version so much:

    1. It adds a lot of features and answers requests.

    2. It's a free update.

    3. This is a photography event, and people were caught off guard when Apple showed their photography product, despite the Aperture image right on the invitation.

    4. Apple never releases hardware on Tuesdays, so there is no hope for any MacBook Pro updates tomorrow.

    5. There will never be another chance for new MacBook Pros. We now know that the current models will be sold forever and ever, even after Apple goes out of business, which will happen by the end of the year.

:pWhy it's obvious why people hate this update so much. In fact I'm almost tempted to get Aperture to manage my photos (Academic discount, 3,000 images, 500 photos <3)

Now I just wish my earlier comments were still here. Tomorrow is Tuesday.

I swear guys: I'm pretty sure most of the people dropping calls are only dropping calls because of the proximity sensor issues.

Next time you drop a call, check to see if it says "Call Failure" on the screen. If it doesn't, it's probably the sensor. (I'm talking to a wall, I'm surebut if one person discovers the real problem, I'll be happy

If it does say call failure, take it to Apple and they'll give you a new one. Simple. (:

    What are those features?

    What is that 'UI'?

    What kind of usability?
Aero Snap. The new superbar. Expandable start menu. The Office ribbon. Stable as a rock OS. Just to name a few.

I agree with Maflynn. Where as Vista was rather dire, Windows 7 beats Snow Leopard. Only by a fraction, which is why I'm still happy using Snow Leopard, but it is still better. Windows has matured considerably, whereas OS X still feels a little juvenile like XP does.

Their online purchase option with in store pickup is almost criminal with it's
false promises and lack of honesty...

    Please explain.

I don't really shop at Best Buy, but over the last 5 years I have used this to buy things 4 or 5 times and have never had an issue with it. I would buy what I wanted, go to the store and pick it up.

Pretty much the only way I could find shopping there tolerable.

This has to be one of the worst Macworld keynotes ever....and there were a couple of stinkers. I mean....where are the new MacBook Pros? Where is a new Mini? Where is an AppleTV with an OPTICAL DRIVE! Nowhere to be seen. What do we get? A new laptop where they charge us more and give us less. I mean...when was the last time Apple shipped a computer without Firewire??? Please! Hell...they should have saved the Mac Pro announcement for today, to add SOMETHING to the awful show. Maybe then my portfolio wouldn't have taken the dive it did. Come on, Steve, is this the best you can do? Where are these new Apple/Intel devices??? My biggest disappointment is the lack of Blu-Ray though. I mean, no new iPod? No new iPhone. I mean....I don't need anything HUGE, just some storage increases. Bad....bad bad bad.

Your idea sounds a lot like Bill Gate's smart fridge telling the us that our milk is going bad and that we should buy a new carton the next time we are at the supermarket.:D :D

You just wait. Soon your Mac will send you a message saying it wants more RAM and a processor upgrade the next time youre visiting the Apple Store. :D

Down $30+ a share since early Jan.

your correct, based on Steve Jobbs response to this which was pure BS we can never trust that the files do NOT get sent out, so with this and their sweat shops in china i think enough activists, governments around the world and companies will shut apple down, so its not just Congress coming to ask Apple why it was still there after a year ago when they where sued for using it to COLLECT POLITICAL VIEWS:

    Lets see why :

Wikileeks, Wall street, Oil Giants, allot of these people used macs and iphones, I think Congress is doing the right thing indicting Apple for violations of privacy on US and foreign citizens becuase if they do nothing other nations will pull the plug forever, Israel already is planning a blockade on the devices

    I agree.

It's sad to see so many down vote your statement - a statement that is an advocate for people and democracy.

Too many people here are more patriotic to corporations than they are to themselves. Sad, sad, sad.

iSteve caves to the likes of Al Franken. Yep. Too Funny.

Maybe Al can get Apple to put a real GPU back in the MBP13? I'm off to email him. Wish me luck!

Apple responded to the people, not Al.

I suppose you care more about the corporations desire to build massive databases, to commoditize every detail about us.

Are we merely targets for advertising, or are we human?

So am I right in thinking that the 23" now has a new 'panel' - so there shouldn't be pink cast etc issues with these new ones?
Also seeing as they're cutting the prices is it worth waiting for true next gen monitors or what...

well, I can see that it wouldn't be fast enough for unbuffered video, but if the receiving piece of hardware could decode h.264, then it would be fast enough, right? I can stream h.264 from apples website wirelessly.
